"Public criminology" is the practice of scholars reaching out beyond academic circles and disseminating their research/findings to broader audiences, such as criminal justice practitioners, journalists, and the general public.

These audiences need high-quality information and empirically rigorous perspectives to bridge the gap between perceptions and evidence, particularly as it relates to the criminal justice system and policing.

John is a proponent of "public criminology", and he has worked toward that goal by appearing as a guest on podcasts, being interviewed by journalists for articles, and writing op-ed pieces in newspapers.

This site is another effort to educate those interested in learning more about policing issues. It will feature a number of different topics (see the folder on the left panel), which will cover an introduction and cursory overview, what data (if any) exists to examine each topic and where to go to find it, and recommended resources/readings for more information. This first is "Violence Against Police.” The second is “Police Use of Deadly Force.” The third is “Officer Demographic Characteristics.”
